The first step should be to window shop. The goal being to decide what type of dress you favor. There are a number of different types to choose from bottlenecks, mermaid, lush or classic, long or short, traditional white or the colored variety. Each adding its' own flavor and style to both you.

Bottleneck Style

When you are considering buying dress made in the bottleneck or trumpet style there are a few things to keep in mind.

This type of dress is slim in the middle and has a flare or widening end towards the feet or bottom. Thus giving the bride the appearance of a mermaid or trumpet look.

This dress type is not for women who have a thick build or short stature.

Empire Waist

This type of dress is similar to a beer glass turned upside down it starts small at the neck line and gets wider the closer it gets to the bottom.

This favors the petite woman who has a small waist. This type of dress should not be considered for a woman with a pear shaped frame.

Sheath

The sheath is a shorter type dress that stops at the knee. This dress is meant for brides who have a small waist line and want to show off their legs.

Pear shaped frames would not be a good fit for this type of dress. As you can see most gowns are designed to complement the shape of the woman who wears it.

When deciding what dress style to choose it's best to go with a dress that compliments the body of the bride. When in doubt bring along a several friends who will not hesitate to give their honest opinion even when that may not be what you want to hear. It's best to make a change at the store at not on your day.
