Tennessee Christmas: A Holiday Collection

Tennessee Christmas: A Holiday Collection

In a trend I must admit I hope doesn't continue, I have now bought two Christmas collections this year. I almost didn't buy Point of Grace's, but I love the title song so much I just had to get it. The songs included here are good and fun. But the collection could have been so much more.

Let's start with the last song on the disc. This is the first single I've heard from the group as a trio (one of their members just left the group to be a full time mother.) With just a hint of country twang, their tight harmonies still shine through. It's a great rendition of a Christmas favorite and a good addition to their Christmas repertoire.

And, again, I do love the song included here. All of them are their original versions, which means we get four part harmony. Their version of "O Holy Night" is amazing. This is one of my favorites as the ladies sing one line over the other during the verses. "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" is upbeat and jazzy. "Breath of Heaven" is a beautiful version of another Amy Grant classic.

But here's where the disc falls apart for me. Their first Christmas release had several good original songs that no one else had done. And only one of them makes this disc. They do include the one original track from their second release as well. Instead of including more of their originals, they include the often covered and even some rarely covered songs. If you really want to make a definitive collection, include the songs no one else does.

And don't even get me started on them including the one minute instrumental version of "Joy to the World." I liked it as an intro to their first Christmas disc. But there was no reason to put it near the end of this one.

Despite how harsh I'm sounding, I do like what is here. There are just better songs they could have included.
