From mismatched Converse low-tops to frothy Monique Lhuillier princess gowns, it’s clear the 35-year-old producer, director, and Golden Globe Award–winning actress (for her portrayal of Little Edie in HBO’s Grey Gardens) enjoys a good game of dress-up. When she arrived at ELLE’s cover shoot in an Alexander Wang tee, gray Rag & Bone jeans, and Steven by Steve Madden work boots, she was up for a transformation.
Drinking Tejava iced tea and excitedly browsing the rack of mostly S&M-inspired clothing, Barrymore, whose romantic comedy Going the Distance (her second with on-again, off-again boyfriend Justin Long) opens this month, showed no signs of timidity—not even when she eyed the set’s black latex curtains and onyx gymnast rings. Eager to pump up her playlist of the Black Keys and Beirut, Barrymore slipped into a Dolce & Gabbana bra top and Louise Goldin miniskirt, grabbed those rings, and gave us her best shot.—Johanna Cox
